The Spec Pond Recreational Facility is a 39.5 acre site located on Boston Road adjacent to the Wilbraham Parks and Recreation Office.  Spec Pond is the town's premier recreational facility.  In 2006, a master plan was conducted by Weston & Sampson to guide the department through a growth period which includes developing the current 13.5 acres that sits undeveloped.

On this part of the site we will highlight several changes and improvements as they occur.  The goal of this page is to not only keep the general public abreast of what is taking place at Spec Pond but also to chronicle the developments of Spec Pond as it changes right before our eyes.  Be sure to check back often as this page will be updated frequently.

If you want to know what you can do to help give the Wilbraham community a top of the line park, feel free to contact our office (596-2816) during normal business hours (Monday - Friday 8:30-4:30).

2008

Week of June 2nd - Not much new to report this week.  The big events from this week was the new access road was surveyed so it looks like completion of the access road is in the very near future.  The other news from this week is that wok began with the new traffic signals out on Boston Road.

Week of May 26th - The holiday shorten week resulted in the process slowing down a little bit.  However, the following tasks were completed this week.
1.  The location and appearance of the new retention basin at Spec Pond was completed.
2.  The parking lot in Spec Pond was brought up to the proper grade.
3.  The new access road connecting Post Office Park and Spec Pond was dug out.
4.  The foundation was finished for the new concession/storage building.

Week of May 19th - This week will go down as one of the most important weeks ever in the development in the Spec Pond Recreation Complex.  This week workers were busy putting the finishing touches on the sidewalks across from Post Office Park and they came out great!  Also, this week attention turned towards Spec Pond as the following events took place.
1.  Sidewalk connecting Post Office Park and Spec Pond along Boston Road was started and completed.
2.  The large parking lot in Spec Pond was torn up.
3.  Work began with the new retention basin next to the large parking lot in Spec.
4.  The foundation for our new concession/storage building is all but finished.
5.  Final preparations were made so that work can begin on the new access road next week.
6.  The temporary retention basin that was situated directly across from the current lacrosse and football game field was buried under.

Next week is sure to be another big week in the continued development of Spec Pond!

Week of May 12th - Work continued to move at a steady pace this week as concrete was poured to complete portions of the sidewalks on the side opposite of Post Office Park.  A little closer to us, work begin on the sidewalk that runs parallel with Boston Road and will eventually connect Post Office Park and Spec Pond.  Lastly, work continued on the foundation for the new storage building down at Spec Pond and is coming together very quickly!

Week of May 5th - Baltazer Construction began the week by continuing their work on the sidewalks.  Late in the week framing for the sidewalks was laid down so that concrete can be poured in shortly.  Also, we were excited to see Gagliarducci Construction down at Spec Pond as they dug out the area which will soon house a new storage/concession building.  This building will replace our current storage facility is which the Little Red School House on Springfield Street.  Prep work for the foundation of the building continued late in the week.

Week of April 28th - Baltazar Construction out of Ludlow has begun work out on Boston Road!  During this week as prep work was done for sidewalks and granite curbing.  These sidewalks will eventually tie into Post Office Park, which will down the road connect and run throughout the Spec Pond Recreational Facility!  Late in the week David R. Northup Electrical Contractors, Inc. out of Agawam began the underground electrical work needed for the stop lights that will be going in at the entrance to Post Office Park.  These lights are long overdue as this will make getting in and out of the Parks & Recreation Office and Spec Pond much easier and safer.

Late March/Early April - Christopher Barbaro, a electrical contractor out of Ludlow, came in and repaired some electrical needs at the pavilion.  Chris, put two security lights at each end of the pavilion, repaired outdated electrical outlets inside the pavilion and updated the electrical box to help eliminate blown fuses.

Mid March - Lycott Environmental group begins their study on the pond itself.  Lycott has been hired to come in and address some growth issues we have in the pond.  Lycott will provide us with solutions that will cut down on plant growth without ruining the natural habitat that exists in the pond.  This will also allow us to expand the swimming area and also improve the fishing area.

January/February - The Friends of Recreation paid to have vinyl siding put on the pavilion.  Previously the pavilion had a wood siding that was quickly becoming not only an eye sore but starting to rot.
