Dear Parents, Student Awareness of Fire Education

Did you know that children five years and younger have one of the worst fire death rates?

Did you know that preschool children have unusually high rates of burn injury?

We are very excited to tell you about a program that your child will be participating in at their child care center. This safety program will teach your child and you fire safety skills to help save your and your child’s life…..

The Learn Not to Burn Preschool Program teaches eight fire safety lessons – lessons that we hope you might want to share with the rest of the family. These lessons include:

circlebullet.jpg        To stay away from hot things that can hurt
circlebullet.jpg        To tell a grown-up when you find matches or lighters
circlebullet.jpg        To "Stop, Drop, Cover, and Roll" if your clothes catch on fire
circlebullet.jpg        To cool a burn
circlebullet.jpg        To crawl low under smoke
circlebullet.jpg        To know the sound of the smoke detector/alarm
circlebullet.jpg        To practice an escape plan
circlebullet.jpg        To recognize the fire fighter as a helper

The children will learn many skills, but remember, fire safety is ultimately the parents’ responsibility. It is difficult for children to react to all fire and smoke situations in the appropriate manner.

Some key points to remember:

circlebullet.jpgNever leave children unattended. Children may start fires or become involved in fires when left alone.
circlebullet.jpgKeep matches and lighters in a safe area away from small children
circlebullet.jpgHave a working smoke detector outside each sleeping area and make sure to test the smoke detector monthly.
circlebullet.jpgDesign and practice an fire escape plan for your home. Practice with  the entire family at least 4 times a year.
